Welcome to www .GregChoongPhotography .com -
Welcome!
I do "Street" and "People" Photography mainly of Singapore, and I do B&W almost exclusively!
My passion in traditional B&W medium started when I first shot a roll of TRI-X in 1984 for a school event! I've been through many stages of exploring the field of photography (both in color and digital) and eventually, I returned to do street and people photography in b&w. Nothing beats capturing the unique moments of people's priceless expressions. A few years ago, I started to develop and print in B&W.
I've given classes to the local photo clubs teaching traditional B&W developing and printing. Recently, I've been invited to give a talk in a coming exhibition in Singapore on "Film based Infrared Photography".
Feel free to view my work and leave me your comments.

I did a project for Singapore's National Library board to capture the last moments of its 40 year old monument. Many people who worked there and once 'secret places' were made public for the first time. The article was subsequently published in a local photo magazine "Lightbox" and the original prints were collected by NLB.
Events "Heartlands" Photo Exhibition
- 15 Nov and 23 Nov '03 @ Yew Tee Community Club I'll
be holding an exhibition with 4 other aspiring local photographers. When I was
initially invited to exhibit my work, I already have in mind to use the "Song
Bird" series. I've been photographing in many bird arenas in Singapore over
the past few years. My series focus on the people surrounding their birds, and
not birds themselves. Their facinating and seemingly candid expressions made
the series a joy to shoot. My exhibtion works were shot with my Leica M6s and
a Mamiya 7, split grade printed on 12x16" fiber based papers and selenium
toned.

Contrary to many who believe Infrared
photography is too difficult to shoot due to its handling, but more
importantly, processing, it's a simple and a joy to shoot infrared just
like the way you would shoot b&w. As I develope my b&w films,
processing Infrared b&w film is just a simple extension
since it is similar to that of traditional b&w films processing.
Though the result is often unpredictable, the challenges make this type of
photography extremely interesting. Pics have that surreal effects as a
result of recording infrared rays on the film, thus making them look
'dreamy' and 'mysterious'. Sit back and enjoy the pics.

"Worship Places", 7 Aug 02 click image for more images and narration. Singapore is a multi-racial, multi-religions country. You can expect diverse religious practices and colorful rituals and processions throughout the year. Thaipusam is celebrated early in the year with devotees piercing their body with many religious items carrying kavadis. A spectacular sight! |

"Indian Muslim Children" Aug 02 click image for more images and narration. These Indian Muslim children were doing marketting with their mother in Singapore Little India. When I asked the boy what were their names, he said "Mohammed, my sister's name is mohammed, and the other is Mohammed". Very cheeky boy. I cropped away the top containing the Chinese words when I printed this pic and my friends were asking me, "was this taken in Pakistan?". |

"Senoko Fish Port series" 25 Aug 02 click image for more images and narration. This is one of few fish ports in Singapore. Many fishermen came in as early as 12 midnight with their catch from the South China sea to do fish trading here. These fish boats, some are huge provide the fish supply which are later sold in the wet market. |

"Ubin Jetty and Boats images" 19 Aug 02 click image for more images and narration. Getting on and off the boats are by no mean an easy task especially you have to do this across them. Many older dwellers of Ubin Island do this daily. Patience is the key. |

"Tiong Bahru Hawker Centre & Chinatown Shots" click image for more images and narration. 5 Aug '02 A popular local delicacy especially for joyous occasions like weddings and birthdays. This stall in Tiong Bahru is quite renowned though the prepartion might not look pleasing it's however. |

"Bird Watching" series . click image for more images and narration. 2 Aug '02 Tiong Bahru Arena is a famous tourist attraction. A place where many heartlanders will bring their pampered song birds for a weekend morning get-together to practice their singing skills. Many foreign tourists will visit this place. Both the audience and the bird owners are interesting to watch too. |
